Flipping Out

What the player sees as getting them the best possible contract (or PT) is what the player will tend to do.

Sonics had the luxury of needing a backup PG last year (with Daniels) that saw as part of his path to a good contract the skills that were needed by the team, some passing, hitting some wide open shots when his player left him to double one of the all-stars, some driving to the rim to draw fouls, and talking the team talk even when he's a black hole once he puts a dribble down. All good in a backup, 3rd or 4th option player.

The Sonics also had a need for 15 minutes of shot blocking, 3 or 4 post-ups, JJ was able to do that for 8 games that counted.

It's what the team needed, it's what those players could provide because it was part of who they were.

Flip hasn't shown signs of being a point guard while not in a contract year, or in a contract year last year. I'm not quite sure why I was thinking that he would suddenly "get it", and run some plays that didn't result in letting go of the ball. Sonics gave him a clear path to show who he was, I think they knew, and that's what the Brunson signing was supposed to resolve.

It is unnatural for Murray to pass the ball.

We like Reggie Evans because he sees rebounding as his ticket, it's what the team needs. His post-ups might give him the idea that he should not let go of the ball.

His contract is tradable on 1/4/06, I don't know if he's coming back, by the end of the year the Sonics might want him gone if he thinks he's the second coming of Ruben Patterson in his contract year (minus the nanny rape).

Reggie's Assisted Field Goals, on court 54%, off court 57%, net -3%

Assisted FG% Allowed, on court 61%, off court 60%, net +1%

He's a negative 2 now, that number will grow (in a negative way) the more he sees post-ups as a ticket to a bigger contract.

I'll hope that the Sonics are waiting for Thursday and including Reggie in a trade to bring somebody bac that they actually want on the roster next year.

Bob Weiss can tell players what ever he wants, so could Nate, so can any coach, but that need has to be in the nature of that player.

How's the crack?

The odds line for most of the games has been around 5 to 6 points favoring the Spurs. That's understandable, they have a better record, they are a good team, most prognosticators pick them to be in the finals.

So, why would the odds line be 10 for the game in San Antonio?

The lines before that had the Spurs by 6.

Is it because Rashard Lewis might be out again?

He was out of last night's game and somehow the Sonics won.

I just don't see either team winning by that much the rest of the way. Both teams play hard every play and the Sonics, unlike the Spurs, know what the other team wants to do. I don't know if I can say that the Sonics will win another game on the Spurs floor but I would be shocked to see them lose by 10 to anybody, anywhere, right now.

Maybe

Maybe they lose game five and after win two against the Spurs and that has been done before. Maybe they need to get a win on the Spurs home floor and that has been done before. Maybe the Spurs have gone up 2-0 and lost a series, like last year, it's been done before.
Maybe the Sonics are just better?
Maybe not, but right now, it is a fair question. There is an argument to be made and that argument is being made by the Sonics to the Spurs in front of anybody watching it.
Maybe it really is all about one game at a time. Maybe the Sonics do not fear them as maybe they did in the first game.

It's a Learning Machine

It's a learning machine that self replicates the parts in needs. Need a wing defender for 10 minutes? Wilkins. Need a post defender for your fouled out center for a possession with less than a minute to go? Potapenko. Need to occasionally score with something other than a put back or long range jumper? Luke scores a floater in the lane. Need a all around front court effort for an extended period of time to slow down Timmy? Collison. Need Danny Fortson to play basketball without chirping at the refs? Done. Need to compete without fear? Done.

All very good.

Just as a young player is inconsistent I suspect that this young team will be inconsistent until the collective team is more mature. One game isn't enough in the maturation process, but two? Maybe not. If the series ends up tied 2-2 then I think the Spurs turn the fear of repeating last year into wins. Hmmm, this might go 6 games, regardless, it will be worth watching.

What is unique about the playoffs as a learning experience is that what you learn in one game you can apply against the same team a few days later. I do not have a notion one way or another about which team will win the next game yet but I do have a new measuring stick, the fans picked the stick up off the floor when they walked out of Key Arena at the end of last nights game. it had SuperSonic finger prints on one end and silver and black uniform threads on the other, spots of blood, a few hairs. I'm not sure how to explain a one point win as giving the other team a beating but that's what it was last night. Hopefully the fans return on Sunday with the new measuring stick, give it back to the players to use again with even more confidence. I don't know if they will win the game but hopefully they can compete with this new armor. This one game does more for the future than beating the kings and winning the first round series.

What did they learn from this? Hopefully they learned that role players win regular season games by exploiting their proficiency at the skill that has landed them their current role and that in the playoffs proficiency must be proved out to be mastery or you lose. There are two seasons.

Is this it?

Not really, could be just a break in the drive to the finals just maybe not this year. The Spurs look to have an answer for most of the players the Sonics have seen fit to put on the floor, or, who are fit to play. I really do think the Spurs would have a harder time dealing with Radmanovic, not that he's some superstar, but when on the floor with Ray and Rashard it becomes tough to guard. I like Reggie Evans and his rebounding but he is limited on one end of the floor to an equal degree that he is prolific on the other.
I thought the Spurs would win the series in 6 games but with Radmanovic out I think that 6 gets whittled down to 5.

What can be gleaned from this test of the Sonics?
They are missing some veteran leadership, next year some of these guys will be a year closer to veteran status. Sometimes you have to grow your own leaders, this includes coaches.

Rashard Lewis
I had remarked to somebody else at the beginning of the year that this team would be better because they are a year more developed. I thought, counter to David Locke, that Rashard Lewis could still make another step. I think he has one more in him because that guy that came back from the All-Star break was that next step guy. Unfortunately four days of mid season preparation doesn't make it a lasting change. Getting booted from the second round of the playoffs and a summer to prepare just might make his state of mind productive over a longer stretch of games

Ray Allen
It should be no coincidence that Ray Allen is more healthy after not playing in the Olympic Games. Go back the 2000 roster and check out how many of those guys ended up missing a significant amount of games that season due to things other than kidney failure and alcoholism.

I think Ray makes it back to the Sonics roster next year.

Antonio Daniels
He will get paid more to play on another team and possibly start again. There are positives and negatives to his leaving. His assist to turnover ratio is impressive, until you see the passes he doesn't throw. His shooting is good, until you see that he dibbled and shot and didn't really run much of a play. His floor spacing is good on both ends of the floor, he's a pretty good team defender, unfortunately some of the rest of the team isn't (I'll get to them in a minute).
His on the ball defense is good in comparison to the rest of the team that isn't so good. I wouldn't mind keeping him but he'll get some deal that makes him leave Seattle. If the money is right I'd replace Daniels with Earl Watson if he would consider coming back.

Luke Ridnour
He's gotten better from last year to this. I expect him to make that 3rd year leap to be more consistent. If you want the ball a lot when you play you want to play with a guy that wants to pass it. How many guards repel free agents because they are shoot first? I think Luke has long term skills and would be a long term attraction to future free agents. His defense has improved some and I expect it to be a little better in the future, but he's not locking any body down. Still his positives will out pace his negatives and that gap will increase every year for the next 4 years. If you think he could be the next Steve Nash then consider his stamina. That is where Nash, AI, and many other smaller guards have advanced games. He has been wearing down this year.

Vlad Radmanovic
I can't see the Sonics letting him advance his skills next year in another uniform but the front court is crowded. Some of that can be resolved when Jerome James leaves and Collison plays a little more center against smaller line ups. Vlad is getting starter minutes, getting some press, is on a winning team, is a restricted free agent. Welcome back Vlad!

Damien Wilkins
Swingman Cometh
I think the Sonics get him in early and get him ready for more next year. I think he's worth keeping for a few years to see how far he can develop. As Ray Allen gets older and his minute are cut back to keep him in line with his production I expect Wilkins to pick up those minutes and step up when there is an injury. He could be a 7th or 8th man in a rotation over the next couple year and possibly more after that. He looks like he improves something from game to game.

Nick Collison
He is a fine all around player and should start next year and every year after that until the end of the decade. He needs to work on a midrange jumper this summer now that he has apparently healed from his surgeries from last year. He is the best front court post defender on the team all of the time, that is, he isn't showing flashes of something and then failing on the next play. He is as good from play to play as any rookie the Sonics have seen on defense in a very long time. We are fortunate to have Jack Sikma to coach him.

Reggie Evans
Where will Reggie go next year? I'll guess that in the end the Sonics trade him for a late 1st round 2006 pick to some team that never sees the lottery and Seattle will get the better of the deal. His minutes get split between Collison and Radmanovic. I think Reggie is good player, has value, but isn't a starter or even a finisher for this team next year. So, what would that make him, an energy guy off the bench?

Jerome James
If he comes back it is because the golden offers didn't roll in for JJ. It would also be on an absurdly short contract. He could act as a bridge between the Robert Swift of now and the Robert Swift of the near future.

Robert Swift
Nobody that knows is saying much but every time I see him on the floor he looks to be playing better and thinking less. I'll guess that he leads the Sonics in blocks per game in two years. I'll also guess that he could play James' minute next year and be more productive in those 14 minutes a game. What the team does for the other 34 minutes (other than playing Collison there some) is the question of the off season.

Vitali Potapenko
Isn't he already in Florida?

Flip Murray
Enigma, Shammond Iverson, call him what you will but with Ray coming back and the fact that Flip isn't a PG... Flips days are numbered. Maybe they could trade him but I don't know what kind of value he has now. It is possible that he comes back on a minimum contract to be traded next year. Hard to say. You look around at some of the teams and think that they could do better with Flip in their back court than the CBA schlubs being rolled out there. Maybe not. Regardless, Flip needs regular PT to be productive and he isn't getting it here, that's the sales job his agent needs to put out there. See ya Flip, back to the east coast.

Danny Fortson
Nate McMillan will do some damage control tonight with Danny. He will be back next year and finish out his contract here. The worst that Danny had to offer wasn't anything near what he's offered to other teams in the past. I think he gets his act together as much as he can while he's here. I think we will come to depend on Luke Ridnour to be a leader in demeanor when it comes to Danny Fortson.

Lastly, thanks coach Cleaves for keeping the team positive. I wish him well on his leaving the team.

It's the Fullers Talking

After a pint of Fullers ESB I have arrived at this point, when Radmanovic and Lewis are able to play at the same time for extended minutes this series is over, that I predict will happen in ernest Friday around 8:45pm. If they do get much PT together on Tuesday it will be Nate discovering how he got here, that is, a variety of 6-10ish guys on the floor at different times doing the things that need to be done.

March 28, 2005

What do we have left?

Why the 3 week prognostication? Spring quarter starts today and it is unlikely that I'll have better answers next week for what is likely to happen than I do right now. This is who the Sonics are, 8-5 team down the stretch. (That's 51 wins without the hot start, 56 with). Still, even that would have been a solid record compared to last year. But, I see 56 total.

I'll chip in here my thoughts, both of them, as the playoffs come closer into view. For now, the rest of the season.

13 games. Sonics are 48-21 today.

8 road games, 5 home games

Tue 29 @ Memphis 5:00pm FSN-SEA NBATV

Sonics will drop one of these next two and I think it is this one.

Griz are deep and athletic enough to outlast the Sonics. This is the game the Sonics can point to as missing Radmanovic's shooting.

Griz 103 to 97

Wed 30 @ San Antonio 5:30pm FSN-SEA NBALP

I think the win one for Timmy wears off by this game and the Sonics hit the offensive boards to beat the better machine with put backs and free throws. This could be the second seed deciding game or the second round match up.

Sonics 94-92

Apr Opponent Time* Local TV National TV

Fri 1 Portland 7:30pm FSN-SEA NBALP

Portland has made the mistake of playing to lose and can't win a game when they "feel" like it. The Blazers need to ward off the stink of losing but by the time this game rolls around the free agents on Portland will be auditioning more than they already are (if that's possible).

Shoot another one Damon! There is a difference between your team being happy that you are making shots and your team wanting you to shoot the ball even if you are hot. There isn't much mystery why the Sonics with 8 free agents and the Blazers with 7 are experiencing different results. It really is about team.

Sonics 98-95 (score will be closer than the actual game).

Sun 3 @ Golden State 3:00pm FSN-SEA NBATVHighDef

Sonics need to not chase Baron Davis, contest his rhythm but not his shot. This game bothers me.

I'll say pick'em and hope.

Maybe Sonics by 1, 97-96

Tue 5 @ Sacramento 7:00pm FSN-SEA NBALP

This could be the 1st round match up and the Sonics will put it on them this game. Lot's of bumping, lot's of contact. Get enough big people standing around and next thing you know Luke Ridnour is running like a little rabbit (this is a good thing). Kings have enough talent still to win this at home. Kings get this one unless Nate McMillan removes the thorn for Fortson's paw, then everything goes out the window and the Sonics start crushing teams again.

Kings 95-92

Fri 8 L.A. Lakers 7:30pm FSN-SEA NBALP

Sonics win this game? No.

Lakers lose it, tentative vacation plans are solidified for some of the Laker players. I'll guess this looks like a summer league game by half way through the third quarter. Send in the Clowns.

Sonics some number, Lakers some number less the number of 3 pointers missed or free throws missed (which ever is bigger).

Let's say Sonics 98 to 89

Sat 9 @ Denver 6:00pm FSN-SEA NBALP

What ye see Starbuck? A whale? No that's the ego of George Karl.

Nate out coaches George, not because Nate is a better coach, but because Nate isn't on a constant power trip. There's no good reason that the Sonics should win this other than George.

Sonics 99-97

Mon 11 Houston 7:00pm FSN-SEA NBALP

Zoinks! This would be an interesting game if McGrady was completely healthy.

I'll guess that the Sonics try to kick this one away by throwing the ball around the gym. That's just what it looks like lately when they face Houston.

Sonics are still deeper, though I see Sura is getting difficult for many teams to handle. He's no star but he's performing well and is just the kind of guy Van Gundy likes around his stars, a do it all utility man that plays the role that the game demands. But, by now it is clear, Nick Collison is a winner on many levels and many ways for the Sonics. I just see Nick performing well against this line up. Rockets make a mistake and feed the bear, Fortson turns into the Tasmanian Devil. Next thing everybody know, the game is over and the Sonics have won.

Sonics 97-94

Wed 13 Dallas 7:30pm FSN-SEA ESPN

Jason Terry again. Sonics win one and drop one against Dallas. I'm just not sure which one.

Dallas 103-99.

Fri 15 New Orleans 7:30pm FSN-SEA NBALP

This is a get healthy game for the Sonics, sort of a pre-post season game. Starters and rotation guys play hard, run plays, crush the Hornets for 40 minutes and then sit the starters as soon as possible. No point in getting hurt over the Hornets. A Robert Swift sighting?

Sonics 98-91

Sun 17 @ Minnesota 12:30pm -- -- What, no TV?

Twolves choose this game to not be jerks (to each other), why now?

Twolves 95-92

Tue 19 @ Dallas 5:30pm FSN-SEA NBALP

Sonics start to power up for the playoffs by winning this one even though it will not make much difference in the standings

Sonics strong on the road, 99-97

Wed 20 @ Houston

Pan appreciation night. Luke Ridnour runs around Yao Ming yelling "I can fly, I can fly!" Sonics bench plays the role of the lost boys and keep getting lost in Neverland (never take a shot when the play doesn't call for it).

Kevin Calabro eats popcorn and reminisces with Billy McKinney, Craig Ehlo keeps asking Kevin "Why do you keep calling me Billy?"

Houston is given the game in a ceremony commemorating Rashard Lewis' 20th game with tendonitis, Lewis doesn't play like he's hurt.

Rockets 98-93

What's that? 8 and 5 the last 13 games.

56-26

That's a solid season by any measure.

March 25, 2005

Swingman Cometh

I've been hoping for a month that Wilkins would get in for regular minutes and Radmanovic gets healthy. But I didn't want it to go down like this for Radman. I knew he could shoot but I've been pleased to see that he's a little more like his dad.

On 3/21/05 his +/- was -20.

On 3/24/05 swung to +4.6.

The sporadic playing time prior to the Laker game made his +/- number meaningless since the sample used was statistically insignificant.

He had 16 points total before last nights game.

He has 76 total minute played. Last night he played 28 of those 76 minutes. The game before against the Bucks he played 10 minutes, the game before that he played 15 against the Lakers. Against the Bucks and Lakers he was productive on the defensive end of the floor. Last night he was just as good on the offensive end.

Last night against Portland he played 28 minutes, 7-10 FG, 2-3 3pt FG, 5-6 FT, 2 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk, 0 TO, 3 PF, 21 points.

The Blazers Miles was quieter after Wilkins entered the game as well. Miles was 4-4 before Wilkins came in and was 4-7 the rest of the game. That wasn't all Wilkins but it was more than a coincidence.

What do I think this means?

It means what I hoped it would mean, that is, that the Sonics have a swingman coming off the bench. He is replacing Rashard Lewis for 2 minutes. He's replacing Radmanovic for 1 minute. He's replacing Ray Allen for 1 minute. He's replacing Antonio Daniels for 1 minute. He's replacing Flip Murray for 1 minute.

All those little minutes are being spent covering up for not having a 6-6, 220 lb swingman on the bench. Well, there he is. He's young, he'll make mistakes, but he will give the Sonics more production in those 6 minutes (averaged) than what those other guys are doing trying to cover up that little hole in the line up.

I'm a little less nervous about Daniels and Radmanovic possibly leaving this summer with each passing game Wilkins plays. I won't entertain the thought of Allen leaving and leaving money on the table. I will think that the resigning of Allen will be less risk to the roster while Wilkins is here. As Allen would age Wilkins could take in a little bit more, as is the case in the way the Sonics develop players.

Wilkins has not shown that he's a starter or a wholesale replacement for the players we have, not yet. But, I remember what I saw a few months ago and saw what I've seen over the past 3 games. He can play.

With each passing game Radmanovic is losing leverage.

Maybe I've lost my mind. Look at the game flow from last night and see if you see something else.

March 21, 2005

Looking ahead, the week beginning 3/21/05

Tuesday, Bucks.
Hopefully there isn't a let down for the Sonics after beating the Lakers in LA. The Sonics should get some more front court help by game time. They will have to get creative to beat the Bucks if Ray Allen can't play.
Sonics 101, Bucks 94
Thursday, Blazers.
They lost to Orlando, Orlando was without Francis and playing the back half of a back to back. Blazers will find a way to get a higher pick even if the Sonics play down to their level, still, Sonics get out on a run and hold a lead. The game is in Portland but the Sonics will feel right at home by getting up for a game against a team unraveling.
Sonics 98, Blazers 90
Friday, Knicks
Knicks are a less talented version of the Lakers (I'm being kind). They are playing better ball over the past month but I think they are overwhelmed by all that the Sonics can throw at them, even if some of those players are in street clothes. This is a physical game on the back half of a back to back. Tough game to call in some ways, none of them ending up with the Knicks winning.
Sonics 96, Knicks 91
Saturday, no game, Ray Allen Kingpin Classic. Will he bowl?
Sunday, Wizards
Likely the toughest game of the week happens after the Sonics get a little more health and Wilkins shows that he can defend the wing well enough to warrant some playing time. In some ways the Wizards remind me of the Sonics. They get up and down the floor as a team pretty well.
Sonics could lose this one, if not this one then the Tuesday game against the Griz (but that's another week).
I'll say the Sonics are healthy enough and suddenly deeper than they realized they were a week prior.
Sonics 103, Wizards 98.
That's 6 in a row since the Detroit loss and injury spree. Look out for the Griz, they'll end this streak (if there is one).

Looking back over the weekend

It was an interesting look at the future over the past two games. Add Radman and swap Fortson for Potapenko and I think you are looking at next years team. There are some benefits to having this happen now. If somebody can't go in the playoffs and Nate is forced to use somebody that hasn't seen the floor all year then he knows how far along they are. Lakers needed that win badly and the Sonics played playoff basketball against them using some guys that might not be on the playoff roster. At one point the Sonics players 7-12 or 13 were whipping the Lakers. The Sonics bench is good enough to beat the current 10th seed.
Lewis was and is dominating. The argument about him being a #1 option on a team has to be put on hold while he puts the team on his back and carries them to victory. He might not be an everyday #1 option, not every day, just most days lately.
Kobe and Butler ran wild and free until Wilkins and Murray were in. If Wilkins keeps defending like that then I'm all for him getting more PT when the regs get back to action or some regular action next year. I could see splitting Daniel's playing time next year between Murray and Wilkins with Murray getting the majority of it.
I watched the game on tape.
I'm not sure who decided that AD shot take a last shot in two of the quarters with Murray on the floor. AD does some nice things but he is to Murray what Brent Barry was to Luke. As soon as AD goes next year Murray will excel as the 3rd guard. I think he is as strong as AD, his D has picked up and he is more successful going one on one (BTW, I can't understand (but I know) why AD would take a last shot in a quarter when Murray is on the floor).
Luke had some mismatch problems but he stepped up his D. The picks/blocks on Kobe in the 1st and later against Butler were stellar. Kobe was looking for a foul but by the time there was any contact Luke has stripped the ball out of his hands, good non-call by the refs.
Nick Collison is stretching out his quality of play. He's not great, he's good and smart.

March 18, 2005

Rest Radmanovic and get him healthy for the playoffs

When the shots fall the individual is satisfied and is more likely to pass the ball having had the ego fed. When the shots don't fall the ball moves less, the effort to get people open reduces since the confidence in the shot falling isn't there (no payoff for the pick setter either). The reaction last year and earlier this year when the shots didn't fall was to pass too much to the point where the ball would end up in the hands of somebody who can't shoot with the clock winding down.

Broken guys are forcing shots or healthy guys that can't shoot are taking shots they shouldn't. What are the possible and impossible solutions?

Sign everybody, nope, too late for that.

Run plays to take different shots that you haven't been taking all year? Not a wholesale solution for a temporary situation.

Get healthy? How's that?

Play a guy who's only proven skill (using the term proven lightly) is that they can shoot the ball. Only play him in limited minutes and only have him perform the part of the plays that he can do (a role).

Why is that? As Nate McMillan has said, he wants guys to have a role and stay in their role even when there is an injury to another position. He doesn't want guys playing out of position, well, playing them in position but out of their role creates the same problem.

Put somebody on the IL and bring Wilkins in. Let him play 5 minutes a game, not much more, maybe even less. He comes in, he plays the role of shooter and then he steps off.

Why him? Murray is a scorer and not a shooter, other players have roles already.

When Ray steps off the floor put in somebody that makes the rest of the players stay in their roles for 5 minutes even if that player doesn't have all of the skills required to replace Ray. It forces the rest of the team to behave, stay in the same role, rebounders rebound, picks setters set picks, passers pass, when Ray steps back on the floor the only real change is that you have a significantly better player in the role of shooter. Until Radmanovic is healthy enough to regain his shooting form I would pass the ball to Wilkins for a few games and live with the results, they can't be much worse then what Radmanovic is doing. Maybe it is but the rest of the team will perform the roles they are used to doing.

I have gone from The Danny Fortson Effect to The Danny Fortson Affected

I've decided after much soul searching and coffee drinking that Danny Fortson is the emotional barometer of this and every team he's ever been on. Good situation and Danny is good, bad situation and Danny is bad. He compounds the teams current manna one way or the other by how he acts when reacting to the team he's on. Want to see what the locker room looks like? Just look at how Danny acts on the floor. Language is the symbol we use to communicate with someone else to communicate what is real. We are affected by and have an effect on others by the language we use when expressing what we are thinking and feeling. I think Danny is acting out not from something within himself but from something within the locker room.

Just my guess.

How about picking up Raja Bell this summer as a backup swingman?

I don't like that guy for all the right reasons. His complaining in the press about players not playing the right way is exactly what I want to see. I do think he takes too many shots but I can live with that if he is willing to come off the bench and defend the wing. He's on a one year deal in Utah paying 800K (according to hoopshype.com).

March 15, 2005

Week Ahead, Second Week of March, 2005

Sonics are in Chicago to repay the Bulls. I think the griping about the officials will get them some assistance from the men in stripped shirts. I think the Sonics win that one at the foul line and three point line. The Sonics will expose the clutching by the Bulls when they go to pick and roll sets. Sonics 101 to 94

The Pistons repay the Sonics on Wednesday. This is the tough one. If they get down or start to drag they really need to play the bench if they have won the night before. If they didn't beat the Bulls then I make the starters pick and roll the entire third quarter. Flip Murray should see a few minutes in both of these games. Daniels' knee is hurting.
Pistons 96 to 91

Orlando is what Steve Francis does, one on one. Friday, I think the Sonics zone them on defense and Rashard Lewis over produces against Steve Francis teams and against Orlando (historically), put the two to together.
Sonics 103 to 95.

Sonics go coast to coast but have Saturday off. Sunday they play Lakers. The Lakers have mid sized guys that can play a mid-court game. The Sonics pull this one down the stretch and make it look like a bigger win than it is. Sonics 103 to 94.

If they go 3-1 the rest of the week that would be great. It would get the magic number down from 11.

What do we know?
Not much but we can speculate.
We know that everywhere Ray Allen and Nate McMillan go the free agent talk is sure to go. The story in The Tacoma News Tribune from Frank The Tank Hughes says that Ray has resigned himself to not having his contract extended before the end of the season. Maybe so, but I think Ray Allen's contract for the coming years will hang on guaranteed money, length of contract and working conditions.
I was amused by reading the NY media talk about getting Allen via sign and trade arrangement. It isn't completely out of the question. The Sonics will be under the salary cap so the requirement of salary matching of traded players having to be within 15%, or even 25% as proposed in the current labor negotiations, is not required. The Knicks could take Ray on at maximum dollars and send back a player the Sonics actually want and not have to take back a bunch of baggage, that's problem number 1. Knicks over value their players to the point of inaction, that's problem number 2. Problem number 3 is that Ray would have to want to go to a team where he isn't the number one option. Marbury is the number one option to the detriment of the Knicks.
I don't live where I work and there's no real point in hyping working in NY even if Ray has a house in Connecticut. He's not going to see his house all that much, not enough to leave money on the table for 5 years. Ray's new baby isn't going to be school age until the end of this next contract so he wouldn't be planting his family one place and playing in another, that's a non-factor. So, he could play any place that provided good working conditions.
So, what do the Sonics have to work with after looking at the Knicks as an example of a trading partner?
The trading partner would have to be able to send back talent and not push baggage.
The trading partner would have to be willing to pay Ray more than the Sonics, total years, guaranteed money.
The trading partner would have to be a place where Ray would actually want to go.
I'll say Ray's chances of returning at 70%. It is worth the risk for the Sonics, they don't have to sign and trade and they don't have to take back salary in a trade.
It would be unfortunate if Ray left for nothing but let's remember that the Sonics were looking to let Gary Payton walk for possibly nothing, instead we had Ray Allen for three more years. We are playing with house money right now as far as the talent exchange is concerned (thanks you George Karl's ego).

I Predict?

If I really could have predicted anything it would have been that Danny Fortson was not going to play. That threw the game out the window.
Still, Activate Wilkins, sit Radmanovic and Lewis and Ray Allen a little and still have a little shooting from Wilkins to make up for that loss of production from the others. This team is wearing down just in time for the playoffs. They should lengthen the rotation for a few weeks and then tighten it back up two weeks before the playoffs.

As far as what happened with Mr. Fortson. Well, let's see. There was a closed door practice with refs calling the action. Somebody that has foul trouble had an argument with Nate McMillan
"Friday, March 11, 2005
Sonics' emotions boil over at practice
McMillan sends Fortson home early"
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/basketball/215538_sonx11.html

Hmmm, when has this happened before?
Wasn't James the target of "tight calls" in the past few years in practice?
Wasn't that playing through the "bad calls" a lesson McMillan has taught before?
I'm willing to guess that is what this is about.

I predict, Sonics vs Bulls

Line is 7 1/2
Under/over (total points) 196
That would be 102 to 94 and 1/2.

Isn't this a hopeful line? The line isn't a predictor of who with win but where 50% of the bets will fall. So, I'll guess that "people" have noticed that the Sonics don't lose three in a row and the hype is on the Sonics side .
The Sonics have been tired and the Bulls on fire. Both teams will look to slow down and defend at some point tonight.
I'll say it is under the 196 and the Sonics win but don't cover the 7 1/2, final score 100 to 93. Sonics win.
I don't condone and do not partake myself, just use the line to show where the money follows the game.
I think having some rest will be good for the Sonics and they will defend a little better. It will be interesting to see how Rashrd Lewis plays tonight. He's been a little quiet and could inflate the scoring. Vlad Radmanovic should rest as much as possible. His wrist injury is showing up in his shot.
Go Sonics!

Just read it

Read the John Hollinger story.
Don't argue, just read it.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=hollinger_john&id=2007347

If Evans improved his FT shooting over the sumer and shot 65% or better he would get playing time at the ends of games as well.

Tired Sonics

I don't know why I'm writing this but, Houston was forcing a lot of that one on one by zoning up and over playing the passing lanes. The team didn't take what the defense was giving them, that is, an invitation to play one on one. Maybe Nate should have put in Flip and let him go at them for 5 or 10 minutes? This is the third game in a row where the other team is over playing the passing lanes to the wing and mixing in some zone. Other than Luke climbing Mt Mutumbo there wasn't much activity that was around the rim.
If you don't like the Flip idea then how about feeding James in the post and have players cut through. Force them to defend somebody rather than an area.
As a side note, it is interesting that Radman made the high/low pass to Ray curling to the paint for a layup in, I think, the second quarter. It's rare that AD makes that pass. Radmaonovic put it right on Ray's hand and that allowed Ray to switch to his left for the lay in in stride, I was a little impressed. Maybe they should run more high low with Radman at the top of the arch. I think they want to do that with Nick but his shot isn't falling. Giving Reggie the ball there doesn't work since he can't shoot and AD will not risk the pass.

While I'm here I'll throw this out there

I generally hate the big breaks between games but here we are until Friday (Bulls no TV). This couldn't have come at a better time IMO. If Flip can go I give him heavy minutes, maybe give some to Potapenko, maybe even Swifty. I don't mean to say they should give one away, but they should see if they can get a win while resting guys a little more.

For March we have had Indy, Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix and Houston. 5 games in 8 nights, 2 of those were back to back on the road, results 3-2.

Also, if you have players on your bench, play them once in a while. One of the few skills Potapenko has is keeping Ming off the block.

Early guess on the summer

I'll throw out there that if somebody is going to leave they will say anything to save face (unless they an idiot).
Last year I was a bit of a Nate apologist thinking that he must have been told to start James and Radman together. You can see here that they don't play at the same time this year.
http://www.82games.com/0405SEA2.HTM
Looks like a total of 62 minutes.
Here the free agents in order.
Nate sign
Ray sign
AD what's the market? I think he gets over paid to leave.
Radman/Reggie/Flip all RFA, cap holds are small
James, if there aren't many takers then I use him to bridge to Swift, he likely gets a market offer beyond what they Sonics want to pay.
Potanpenko left last November, we just haven't noticed yet.
Sund has kept the fax machine hot for over a year.
That leaves us with
Ray, Rashard, Reggie, Radman, Nick, Swift, Fortson, Ridnour, Flip, Wilkins, a #1 pick, 2 second round picks, enough cap room to sign somebody, makes 14.
That's good. One of the second round picks can go to NDBL.
I think this happens faster than I anticipate.

Collison vs the Motorheads

It has been a few games in a row where he has been put on a post player that has scored and suddenly the scoring stops. Unlike those other games Nicks defending has not drawn as many fouls as you have pointed out. I hope this carries on for him. He works hard and does the right things. That block he had in the second half would have been called a fould in prior games.

OT: The Emerald Bandwagon, Willie Bloomquist

Last night while sitting in the layzboy I came to the conclusion that there is a green wagon circling Seattle. The wagon isn't Seahawk Green and Blue, it isn't Mariner Blue with Green lettering, nor is it SuperSonic Green and Gold. It's some other green, Emerald green.
Some local sports fans hop on when it's his or her teams season and they ride it around until it becomes clear that the season is over, one way or another. While on board they cheer the local team and attach there emotions to any local tie they can find even though the vast majority of these "players" are following a paycheck exclusively and only roll into town to work, most don't even live in the city during the season. Once in a while you have these "fans" that hold some special attachment to these people that happen to be born in this state even though the player may otherwise stink. Those fans and players deserve each other. This doesn't explain Hargrove and his interest in Bloomquist.

"Bloomquist is a nice player; I really like him," Hargrove said. "He's one of those guys who, the more you see him, the more you like him."

Mo Cheeks Fired

Did coach Cheeks really deserve better teams?
He might be a good person, was a good player, but they probably should have won a few more games, even with the knuckleheads on that team (way to go traderBob).

Rashard Lewis

"Teams are defending us a little different now," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "They're trying to take away the perimeter, which is opening some things inside. We've got to look to punish teams for doing that."
(from the Seattle PI)

I think this is a significant point in Rashard's season and possibly career. If he gets more post ups over the next 28 games and dominates like he did yesterday then maybe he becomes the #1 option in the next couple of years. He's 25 and is giving the Pacers more than they could handle today.

March 01, 2005

Can Wilkins play?

If he can then they should sit Radman and Rashard a little and get them well for the playoffs. They can get a few postups from Collison and Fortson and get some shooting from Flip and Wilkins. But please, no 3 guard line ups for extended time.
Now is the time.

Re: moving on with the rest of the season

I was close, 98 to 88 was under 191 and closer to 185, Sonics covered the 8 points. No questions left in the Twolves minds, they have to go un beaten the rest of the way and Seattle would have to be sub .500I thought Rashard would have a bigger night.Vitali 10 and 8, nice.Ray and Radman were really hot in the second half.

February 25, 2005

moving on with the rest of the season

Yesterday is over, 30 games to go, conference opponent in the house, Wally "who won no Seattle fans with his childish antics during the last meeting, " is back and I'll guess he gets some treatment by the Sonics front court. I can't imagine that it was just the fans that noticed that Wally was an assclown.

Art Thiel is wearing his Green and Gold pajamas.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/basketball/213552_thiel25.html
What does the wallet say?
stardust opened at -6.5 and people jumped for the Sonics to cover, line is now -8. With the under/over staying nearly the same 190 to 191.
What's that 99 to 91, one point under and the Sonics better than the Twolves in the eyes of Stardust. Covering 8 with the total score under 200 is a convincing win (as opposed to covering 8 and the combined score is 220). In many minds the Sonics clinch tonight.
I think that Rashard has an average night on paper and the twolves throw every defender they can at him and lose trying to stop him. Just my guess.
I'll also guess that the Sonics look to lock them down, still cover the 8 but the final is under the 191, closer to 185, 96 to 88. That would be an even bigger win and I think it is very possible. The only thing to inflate the numbers is some garbage time scoring.
With the bad knee I would look to defend KG with James for as long as James can, after KG gets tired of the abuse and floats outside I'd send Reggie after him.

No trades for Sups

Hyperbole aside, they are hovering around the Ray situation before making any other moves. They could have done something minor but what's the difference when your magic number is 16 (throwing Brian a bone).

The problem is (on this I'll be shocked to see an argument) that the Sonics don't talk, leak anything. Once in a while I'd like to have something "get out" that they laughed off a trade, who was in it, and that it should be clear to you and I that it was better to not deal. A few years ago it was refreshing to hear Wally Walker say on the radio that he literally laughed at the Knicks calling to trade Ewing for GP. We could all look at that and say "thanks for not doing something stupid". That stuff counts with fans, or at least this fan. Once in a while, they have to throw us a bone and that will go a long way to squelching some of the criticism. Sund mentioning that they were going after a couple players last summer is meaningful to me, saying that they only wanted 4 guards confirms why there were rumors from Houston that they might get AD during the BB negotiations. Brent signed with SA and the AD rumor want away.
A little more communication to support their actions would actually help support their actions (or, inactions).

Key Arena funding proposal

The climate for this isn't the best but the proposal isn't too bad. But, there isn't a mention about the 24 million from the sale of the land that the practice facility is on to the B&M Gates Foundation. In the "other" proposal the cost is knocked down by 24 from the land sale.
500 more seats, all revenue, new practice facility.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002187629_sonics23m.html

"At the request of the Seattle Sonics and Mayor Greg Nickels, a bipartisan trio of state lawmakers will introduce legislation today that would finance a $205 million expansion of KeyArena and provide millions more for King County arts programs by extending several taxes now used to pay construction debt on Qwest and Safeco fields.
The bill asks lawmakers to redirect revenues to city-owned KeyArena and local arts programs that would first be available in 2013 when the Safeco Field debt is retired.
Those revenue sources include portions of car-rental, general-sales, hotel-motel and restaurant taxes in King County. The Sonics' proposal also includes a sales-tax exemption on Arena construction costs. The bill is sponsored by Reps. Eric Pettigrew, D-Seattle; Larry Haler, R-Richland; and Kelli Linville, D-Bellingham.
It does not include an earlier proposal floated by the Sonics to indefinitely extend several temporary taxes to pay for future renovations to Qwest and Safeco fields as well as KeyArena. "

"The bill would retire KeyArena's $58 million debt from the building's 1995 remodel. City leaders want to see a financial recovery for KeyArena because its problems create a drag on the entire city budget.
It also would help King County arts and cultural groups, which have been eyeing the same revenue sources as the Sonics. The bill would steer $4 million a year to arts, cultural and heritage groups from 2013-20. Starting in 2021, the Sonics would split the 2-percent hotel-motel tax with those groups until the KeyArena expansion is paid off.
Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis said approval of the bill would make it more likely that the Sonics — who say they have lost $50 million over the last five years — would stay in Seattle when their current lease expires in 2010.
As part of the legislative package, the Sonics would manage the renovation project and assume responsibility for any cost overruns. They would also commit to a new 20-year lease and manage the new KeyArena for the city. In return, they would receive all revenues from operating the arena.
The team now splits some revenues with the city. Sonics executives say that split makes it difficult for them to make a profit.
The proposed expansion would nearly double interior space at KeyArena to 730,000 square feet, including a practice facility and team offices. It also would add about 500 seats, while eliminating roughly half of the building's 53 luxury suites in favor of more varied seating and prices.
Sonics' Vice President Terry McLaughlin said the arena's physical expansion is more about "fan appreciation" than adding to the team's bottom line through food, beverage or souvenir sales.
"It means we can sell tickets easier, he said. "It would make the fans' experience better."

A couple more things...

This is where I lunge at to wheel and swerve the bus nearly off the road.
The Front Court, Nick, Danny, James are foul magnets.
All Stars get calls in the playoffs.
Both given.
The difference between before the break and after is that the league says that Rashard and to a lesser extent Luke are either All Stars or future All Stars. Ray was, is and All Star. It will be interesting to see if more calls start going Rashard's way and, more importantly, do they start going Luke's way a little? I'll guess that they do.
This team is so lucky to have 2 young guys picked by the league to be showcased over the past week end. I think it pays off a little the rest of this season, a little in the summer and into the future.
Keys are Rashard rebounding 1 or 2 more balls a game, Luke getting some and-1 calls on some of his adventures in the paint.

Sonics All Stars

The Sonics All-Stars kids looked unimpressive. They are not #1 options, other than Ray Allen, but do a lot of things to help a team win. I think Ricky Davis would look good in an All Star game, he's not going to win many games though. It is a subset of the All Stars that both can put on a show and win games doing it, like Iverson. I'm glad that some good players were invited to play with the All Star subset.
The closer to the playoffs we get the easier it will be for you to go on vacation. This team is young and the veteran teams will be gearing up. The Sonics were geared up in November.
On Ray, I think the Sonics know what the market is and will hold to it.
In the end they will either sign Ray or only take back in SAT that 68 mil. Just guessing at the number of team that would want Ray at his price and eliminating the teams with nothing to send back in trade I think the number is much smaller than any of us thinks.
I was hoping to have an idea of what the new CBA (contract) would look like by now though I'll guess that the Sonics management has a pretty good idea.

February 16, 2005

Radmanovic off the bench

Vladi isn't starting at PF against Tim Duncan or Chris Webber, not like last year.
Lot's of players play out of "position" coming off the bench to fill a role and it depends on matchups. Sometimes he plays SF, sometimes the other team doesn't have a C or PF coming off the bench. If the other team isn't putting a PF on the floor and Vladi is on the floor with Lewis I'm still not calling him a PF. At some point, usually with bench players, the idea of players fitting the 1-5, PG, SG, SF, PF, C positions goes out the window.
Playing 3 guards and a SF and a PF to match another team playing 3 guards and a SF and a PF doesn't mean to me that anybody on the floor is a C.
I'm not putting up an argument, I just don't go for the definition with bench players.

February 15, 2005

Iverson Wants Out

Having all the money is never enough, but it's a start.
The 76'ers team has made questionable moves for the past few years trying to put or keep something around Iverson. It might be a good idea if they did worry more about having a good team and less about propping up a below average team, but that's not gonna happen.
I like how these guys suck the cap space out of these teams and then cry that they don't have supporting players. I know they signed guys to some horrible contracts but looking closely those other deals are for 4 or 5 mil a year. There is a Tim Thomas on the roster.
There isn't a trading partner that pops into my head that the 76'ers could partner with that would return a player that would put buts in those seats.

February 14, 2005

I wasn't going to bring this up

I wasn't going to bring this up but Mitch on KJR was harping on this this morning. He was wondering who was the guy that with 3 seconds left was inbounding the ball and missed a wide open Ridnour and then a wide open Allen. I was the guy driving down I-405 yelling at his car radio "It was Daniels!"
Of the players on the floor with 3 seconds to go AD was the last guy I wanted to throw the ball in. He does a lot of good things on the floor, making that pass isn't one of them. As it is, if Allen is curling off a screen and has to wait for the pass then what's the point of having the screen?
And another thing, he picked up his dribble a couple times in the first half when he would cross over the half court line that left me scratching my head.
If this is what I have to worry about with a team that is 35-14 then that's ok.
Oh well, game shouldn't have come down to that anyway against a team like Dallas.
It's going to be a long couple of days of crummy writers making bad trades and very little actual news will come out.

February 11, 2005

Fear not the Kings

4.28 to go and Webbers running down the court with that stupid scowl after he made a 3 pointer like they had just won the game. The only thing keeping the Kings from winning that game was fear, the Sonics just don't have any. I'll call it the All-Star Rashard Lewis taking it to the Kings down the stretch, fearless, not to be stopped.
As for Webber, he handles the ball enough to get a triple-double and is an All-star on one end of the floor. His lack of mobility doesn't show up on the stat sheet. Watching Lewis and Webber on both ends of the floor leaves me with the impression that the right guy is going to Denver. Game on the line is where the All-Stars shine.
Nick Collison was very good. That's all there is to it.
I was pretty happy to see Radman have the guts to get in the paint when Fortson went out and help on the boards. He could have floated outside on the offensive end, but no, he went to the glass.

Boozer on the Block?

I think he is a hustle guy. He's a pretty good all around player but doesn't have a singular talent that he uses to out perform others at his position, he's often out hustling.
If he were on the Sonics team making that money I'd be unhappy.

February 10, 2005

Swift?

I think that if Robert Swift saw 2 or 3 minutes a game average the rest of this year that next year he couldn't produce 3.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, 3.8 fouls per game if he were forced the play 14.8 minutes a game next year.
I do think the Sonics need a player to bridge next year and possibly the following year of Swifts development. But, if that didn't happen and he were forced to play 14.8 minutes a game next year I don't see a big team drop off.
I wouldn't mind having Aaron Williams here for next year to be the one year insurance policy. He's got a player option for next year at 3.375 mil.

Capital Call

I'll put this up front. Last summer I thought that when John McCaw sold his Conucks hockey team for 200 million that he would turn right around and buy into the Sonics. I still believe that. I dont' have any information, no news story, no connection, just a feeling.

"Sharing the burden
By Percy Allen
Seattle Times staff reporter
Wally Walker, Sonics president and CEO, confirmed yesterday that the franchise has issued a mandatory capital call to its shareholders to raise funds that would cover operating losses for this season projected by the team at $15 million.
Walker declined to comment in detail on the agreement, nor would he specify how much money the team hopes to generate. However, two sources with knowledge of the process said the Sonics expect to raise about $17 million.
In an e-mail last week to members of The Basketball Club of Seattle LLC, a group of local private investors who purchased the Sonics and the WNBA's Seattle Storm in April 2001 for $200 million, Walker notified them of their financial commitment. The Times obtained a copy of the original contract, which states: "The Subscription of Agreements signed by each unit holder has a 10 percent mandatory capital call feature, which, if needed, would be required of all owners."
Shareholders have until early March to raise the funds and Walker confirmed that partners who do not meet capital calls face dilution of their ownership stakes. Sources have indicated that a major local investor has inquired about purchasing a significant stake in the Sonics and that an announcement is forthcoming.
Walker, however, denied rumors and reports that the team is for sale, but said individual owners can do whatever they want with their shares.
Before the season, Howard Schultz, the Sonics majority owner and chairman of The Basketball Club of Seattle, refuted claims that he was seeking to sell his share in the team, which is believed to be about 42 percent.
"I'm not selling the team," Schultz said on Oct. 4. "I have no intention of selling the team. I'm excited about the season. Excited about the direction we're going. ...
"I learned a long time ago at Starbucks when there was a lot of cynicism and concern about whether or not we could build a national company around coffee and a lot of people doubted that. What we demonstrated was that through hard work, passion, commitment and perseverance and surrounding yourself with great people that you can succeed."
Schultz's declaration preceded revelations the team is $78 million in debt and has lost $50 million in the past five years.
On Tuesday, in a speech sponsored by the Puget Sound Business Journal, Walker confirmed reports of the losses and reiterated his stance that the team's financial woes cannot be reversed by the team's surprising 33-13 record. Despite a $53 million payroll that is the 10th-lowest in the NBA, according to Sonics officials, even if the team sells every seat for every game this season it team would generate $32 million, which would be $6 million below the NBA average.
Walker has said the Sonics are losing money because of their lease agreement that requires them to give the city of Seattle a large share of revenue from suites, parking and KeyBank naming rights to pay off the $74.5 million in debt used to finance the arena's 1995-96 renovation.
At this time, the Sonics have no plans to use the funds generated from the capital call to help finance proposed renovations to KeyArena.

Magic number is 27.5

37 games to go, 9.5 games up on Minnesota. I'm joking at the expense of the Timberwolves since they are, as of today, 9th in the Western Conference. There has been some well thought out discussion on the performance of the Sonics since the beginning of January (that last part was purely for the benefit of the new readers and to keep them from wondering what the heck did I do to suffer from starting to read this blog).
The Timberwolves have struggled and lost 5 straight games. Going .500 over the past week would have been a welcome change from what has gone on with them.
If the Sonics can get this to 10 games by All-Star Break that would be great. The last month of the schedule will be tough. Some cushion would be good.

NBA contract talks

Nothing really new in the story other than Antonio Davis chirping about trust. It does mention that there will be more intensive negotiations durring All-Star weekend. I'm interested in hearing what happens then.

From the Houston Chronicle

"One of the primary goals of the players is to stop having such a substantial chunk of their paychecks withheld, while the owners are seeking further control over payroll costs. Among the items on the league's wish list is a reduction in the maximum length of contracts from seven years to four, an increase in the minimum age for draft eligibility from 18 to 20, and a substantial reduction in the percentage increases available to players who sign long-term deals.
Sources involved in the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there already have been indications that the owners would be agreeable to altering the way they distribute the escrow tax among themselves, while the players have signaled some flexibility on the issue of maximum contract lengths.
Stern made clear he will not accept a revenue-neutral deal, while Hunter insisted there be more give-and-take than there was during the 1998-99 negotiations. Some of the sessions have been heated, but tempers have always been prone to flare when players and owners are in the same room, and the hard feelings from those arguments have lingered."

the other all-star weekend hope

I hope that the Commish has something positive to say in his midyear state of the NBA speech about the new CBA (contract). I do remember that they were attempting to get something done by then but I haven't noticed anything indicating that will be the case. It would be good PR and possibly good grab for advertising dollars and a few sports fans if they could produce something near the time that the NHL misses their All-Star game.
As a bonus, it could give some teams a green light to make moves prior to the trade deadline if the luxury tax, salary cap, BRI (basketball related income), etc., are known.

All very nice, I'm happy for him but I'll kick this out there.
Here are the top 10 assist PG's in the NBA, Luke is #9, second in the Western Conference.
http://tinyurl.com/4vst9

He's #5 in Assit/TO (AD is #1)
http://tinyurl.com/5fw2f

He might not be on the Allstar team, but maybe he should.

He turns 23 in 2 weeks.
You can get a better idea of how good a player will be by his 3rd or 4th season. He'll be 24 or 25, maybe an allstar second teamer. Stunning.

I think it is fair to say that the improvement in the Sonics has come from young guys maturing. Do nothing trade-wise works for young players. Return this same team next year and they are even better, just because.
I wonder if Ray will be around to see it.

George Karl to Denver

He swiped the Bucks job from Chris Ford while coaching the Sonics, forced the Sonics hand by breaking rules about talking, got fired on purpose, got Chris Ford out of that job and took it and the largest coaching only deals at that time.
I can't wait to get the good, young players he casts off.
I predict:
He'll turn Melo into Bigdog in every possible way before you can say, baby blue.

Lay the blame for the Denver loss where it belongs

It's my fault. I didn't cheer loud enough in my living room. I waited too long to put on my Supersonics pajamas.
I didn't yell at the tv that they were not exploring a defense to stop a smaller, quicker player with a funnel/zipper and shot blocker at the head of that funnel (though I'll not Collison's block in the fourth was pretty nice).
The team can forget about it and move on. I'll work on my game (watching) and see if we don't get a better outcome. Well, the picks could be cleaner and the guards could use them better. But, I'll fix the rest.

AD, pass the ball, please

I can't take it. Trade him.AD for Jim Jackson.
Sonics likely win. I just can't take the pounding (of the ball on the floor by AD).

Would Danny opt-out of his contract this summer?

Would Danny Fortson opt-out f his current contract given his productive play this year?
I'll say no.
One of the few things that has slowed down Danny Fortson in the past has been Danny and the people on the teams he's played on. He appears to have made friends and relationships on this team that help him translate his off-court situation being a good thing to his on-court perfromence as a good thing. One is the product of the other to some extent.
As for his off-court and on-court relationships I'll point to Danny and Luke Ridnour as having what appears to be a symbiotic relationship best summed up by these pictures.
This would be Luke Ridnour
And this would be Danny Fortson with Luke Ridnour "having his back".

BTW, see the story in today's The Tacoma News-Tribune on Rick Dupree for more links between some of the players.

Trading Vitali

I think that Vitali is handling this well and professionally. I have had some things in the past that I have and have not liked about the Sonics organization. One of the things that I've liked is that they were accommodating to Eric Snow who was not playing, but sitting, behind Gary Payton and asked to be traded. Wally Walker not only traded him but sent him to a team that had a situation that could benefit Snow. The 76ers needed point guard help and Snow had an opportunity to play and develop. He ended up starting many games, had a trip to the NBA Finals, developed better skills and was rewarded with a pretty good contract.
I believe that Rick Sund and Wally Walker will work to find Potapenko a situation that would be beneficial to him if a trade returned an asset, at the very least didn't return some baggage or a bad contract.
Early last year Vitali was on the bench for the wrong reasons. This year he's on the bench for the right reasons. In either case Vitali has acted as the professional that he is. I believe that if the requirements can be achieved for both parties then something will happen.
What is possible? He could go to a loser team where he could start, play and display his skills prior to his impending free agency.
He could go to a team that is wanting to make a run at the playoffs, needs front court help but doesn't want to be tied to a long contract.
In either case I would look for him to go east where a team either plays against the Shaq lead Miami Heat, or is the Shaq lead Miami Heat.

From the SeattlePI.com
"We're still in the early stages," Bauman said of an inquiry into a trade. "Vitaly would be very satisfied if he stayed with the Sonics and played the whole season there. He just wishes he was more a part of it. He knows that he can do a good job."

Fwd: [homer] Re: Optimistic

Just so you don't think I'm a bandwagon fan I have some proof that I'm
just a homer.

Northern Exposure

Sonics games are getting picked up more and more by national broadcasts.
The only value to the team I can see is that they player value to the fan and possibly then to the other team might increase. Familiar names have more value. It becomes an easier sell in trades if the fans on the east side of the planet have actually seen somebody play more than the one time they arrive in town.

Also, when players like Rashard put up 35 and 11, even in a loss to the Wizards, and it is seen by more than the people reading this page then he's likely going to get more consideration for allstar voting, endorsements, little stuff like that.
Who is the backup PG for the Hornets? Not too many people in the west would know (including me) and they'd be PO'd if there team traded for him no matter how talented he is (or isn't). The backup SG on the Sonics is Flip Murray and the more people see him the more value he has to a fan base in trade.

The "Flip" side is that if you are familiar, not necessarily more talented, the perception might be that you are under achieving by not living up to your name recognition (I'll call them the "Name Blazers"). There are individual Name Blazers as well. Guys that were on TV a lot but were not really all that good, but, fans know who they are, they get bigger contracts or land on teams when they should get the hell out of the NBA (Travis Best, this means you).
Just my guess.

Random notes

I'm watching the Laker/Rockets game.
Rockets have 37 points in the 1st half. I have yet to see Tracy McGrady lead anybody to anything but a high lottery pick.
The Timberwolves just got by the Ivy-less 76ers, losing Cassell in the contest to an injury. Two things to note, Cassell kept them in that game, Try Hudson looked horrible. They better hope Cassell makes it back soon.
More random.
The Sonics just went 3-2 on a road trip losing 2 in a row for the 1st time this season. As bad as they looked I don't see the Lakers or Rockets making a run at the Sonics any time soon. Sonics have a couple days off before facing the Heat at home. I expect them to bounce back and take it to the Heat again. Sure, the Heat are kicking the Blazers around the Rose Garden, but that's not that big of an impact but they will be hitting Seattle on the second game of a road trip. They will arrive in Seattle the day that the Seahawks and Rams play a playoff game. There's going to be nothing for those Heat players to do but get into trouble.

Nets exceptions

Nets have a 10 million and a 5 million dollar exception from last summer's salary dump.
If I'm Sund I'm calling and pushing Potapenko or James on them. They gave away big players with the picks in the VCarter trade and are now looking for some help.

Potapenko doesn't have much value to the young Sonics team past his ending contract, though, if he can walk and your team is in the east, has to face Shaq 4 times in the regular season and possibly 7 times in the playoffs, maybe you just gave away 2 bigmen to the Raptors, maybe you have a giant trade exception, maybe you have a 1st round pick that could be pushed out a year, maybe your roster looks like this

http://www.nba.com/nets/roster/

Maybe you signed Jabari Smith and think of him as an upgrade to your front court.

Martin trade picks coming in:

"The breakdown of the future picks acquired by the Nets includes: Clippers 2005, protected 1-14 or 2006, unprotected: Philadelphia 2005, protected 1-8 or 2006, protected 1-5 or 2007, unprotected: Denver 2006, protected 1-5, 2007, protected 1-2, 2008, unprotected. "

http://www.nba.com/nets/news/kenyon_040715.html

Picks sent to the Raptors:

"The two first round selections sent to Toronto were originally acquired from Denver as part of a trade made this past summer. The draft picks include Philadelphia’s first round pick in 2005, protected 1-8 or 2006, protected 1-5 or 2007, unprotected and Denver’s first round pick in 2006, protected 1-5, 2007, protected 1-2, 2008, unprotected."

http://www.nba.com/nets/news/carter121704.html

I'd like that Clipper pick that is lotto protected in 2005 and unprotected in 2006. I would start piling on some sweeteners to make that happen excluding rotation guys. I'd go as far as Murray, no, I'm not kidding.
